Some questions....

Why do schools have a two hour delay when it is 0 degrees, but no delay when it is 2 degrees? I feel so bad for some of my students that literally have to walk from one side of Beaver Falls all the way to the other side of town just to get to school.

If your child takes ritalin, and it has been proven that the ritalin effectively works, then why do you let the prescription run out and not give your child his ritalin for days and days and days? I don't know, maybe write yourself a little note to remember to keep the prescription up to date. By the way, ritalin doesn't work instantly...it takes a few days, or sometimes weeks, of taking it consistently for it to be effective.

Why do republicans and democrats bicker back and forth and back and forth like four year olds? Work together for once in your life and get this economy fixed before we are all at the market trying to sell our wares like they did during the Great Depression.

How does combining school districts raise test scores? The lovely Ed Rendell went to Washington proposing that Pennsylvania reduce its number of school districts from 500 to 100. A bunch of opinionated anonymous goofs put their two cents in about this issue on the Beaver County Times website. One knucklehead in particular stated that if we combine all of our school districts, we could get rid of teachers and then raise our test scores. How in the world are test scores just going to miraculously go up by combining schools? And furthermore, why do we want to get rid of teachers? I thought the important thing about fixing the economy was to create more jobs, not lay people off. Because of financial reasons, we have lost so many staff members at my school over the years. When I first started working there, three reading specialists, two math specialists, and a few other teachers that we called "IST" teachers who were just around to help out. We now are down to one reading specialist and one math specialist. And we have more pressure than ever before to raise test scores. As my boss says, "they keep giving us more stuff to do, but they keep taking away what we need to do it." I'm not complaning because I love what I do and I love my job, but I just get heated when people who don't know what they are talking about put their two cents in...Rendell included.

Why would Corynne rather dribble a basketball than sit down and read a book? I have no comments about this one. People who know me well, would say that she is just like me and what would I expect with three older brothers. But her three older brothers and I all read. :-) I told her today that she is not going to be a pretty dummy!

That's all for now. :-)
Go Steelers!

They will demand as much as the can, then demand more...This is good, this is the only way politicians know how to do their business. It is the same thing when your Union negotiates with your School District. If the Democrats were the Republicans there would be no bickering, they would just jam legislature thru like the Republicans did with a far less majority. I think I like this way better....we can all listen to the other guy before we ignore them ;-)

We are dealing with the same issue at work...people leave and are not replaced, but the same amount of work is there...28 people are currently being laid off, no one is replacing them because their job is considered "redundant", yet it is business as usual. The ones remaining still have a lot of work to do; students are expecting a quality education, but we have to cut back on teaching hours to save money, and cut back on support staff whose jobs are considered redundant. I still say if we had a woman as president of this school, things would be run better because women KNOW how to run things and turn 15 cents into a dollar.....!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As far as school districts merging, I think in some cases it is a good idea. I also think it's a good idea for some municipalities and police departments. The only way this area is going to thrive is to work together and share. I think getting rid of 400 school districts is too much. Not every district needs to merge.

As far as schools having to do more with less, unfortunately that's the way of the world these days. Look at The Times, when I was hired there were something like 15 reporters and some freelancers. Now there are seven reporters, no freelancers. They are still trying to cover all of the same terroritory with 8 less people. And people wonder why the product quality has declined ...
