I know this is gross...but I told my dad I would post it. This is their dead groundhog. I am sure you will get the whole story on his blog. (He wasn't too sure about posting a picture, so I did it for him.) Grammie is happy now because this groundhog is dead!

It's another body to add to the collection in their back yard. I'm waiting for them all to rise up in a mass zombie groundhog invasion.
There is a story to tell. Groundhogs are difficult to trap because they are so wary. But this experience makes me wonder if it's just a matter of using the right bait. Toni found on the net that groundhogs are fond of melons. We had some watermelon that had just about exceeded its shelf life. I put a little pile on the route we knew it took back and forth from the hole to the yard. Toni watched for a couple of hours but it didn't come out for the melon. It did eat it overnight or early the next morning. I put a second pile where I could get a better shot and waited in the dining room window. Unfortunately, the next door neighbors were out and about in their backyard and it didn't come out. The pile of melon was gone yesterday morning. I placed another pile and waited about 45 minutes. The groundhog came sauntering out from the hole without any apparent concern and was heading for the watermelon. It probably thought it was in groundhog heaven given that it was being fed what it likes a lot. It died a fast and humane death. A head shot is no problem when you're using a scope at 20 yards.
The only thing missing was Toni running to me, hugging me and saying "My hero!" just like in the old westerns.
I too am worried about a mass groundhog zombie invasion. Matt buried the ones he's killed in the yard. I've always thrown my kills into the woods along Beaner Hollow or Wildwood Roads. No sense pushing the envelope when it's not necessary. Besides it was too freakin' hot to dig a hole.
You should have just used some good old fashioned anti-freeze, that way you could have gotten rid of your stray cat problem too.
Whoever the anonymous is who suggested the anti-freeze ... Shame on you!! I was just on this rant the other day. It's not the fault of the cats. It's the fault of the bad cat owners who don't keep their pets on their property. The cats are just doing what cats do. They don't know they're causing problems. It's unfair to poison the poor cats. If you want to poison something with anti-freeze, find the irresponsible owners.
